Dr. Muhammad Anwar is a thought-leader in the field of Islamic Banking and Finance, with thirty-five years of experience in teaching, research, and advising. During his tenure, Dr. Anwar has published four books, two monographs, and more than forty peer-reviewed articles. In addition, he has advised institutions and governments in Malaysia, Pakistan, Jordan, and USA.
Dr. Anwar has dedicated his career to the integration of conventional and Islamic knowledge, covering Money, Banking, Finance, and Macroeconomics.

Muhammad Anwar was born on 21 November 1947 in Pakpattan Shareef (Pakistan) after shahadat of his father, Chaudhry Sardar Muhammad, during his families migration from Fazilka, India to Pakistan. Anwar's mother labored 24/7 for earning meagre wages to raise him and his six siblings whose survival was at stake. Anwar was married to Asmat Jehan in 1978. They are blessed with two sons and a daughter. Muhammad Wajeeh Anwar was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1979; Muhammad Smee Anwar in Dover, New Hampshire in 1983; and Misbah Binte Muhammad Anwar in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 1989. Wajeeh and Smee are both happily married since June 2010. Dr. Anwar and his wife currently reside in the Boston suburb of Acton, Massachussetts.
Dr. Muhammad Anwar had to leave school at age of 13 to work along side his family struggling for survival. Three years later, in 1963, he resumed schooling at AV Middle School in Bahawalnagar living under care of his elder sister. He passed his eighth grade with first class distingtion in 1964. That inspired him to continue his education. He continued his schooling thanks to support in the form of scholarships, fellowships, and other financial support.
Dr. Anwar did his Matriculation from Government High School, Pakpattan in 1966; F.Sc. (1968) and B.Sc. (1970) from Government College Sahiwal; Master of Business Education from Punjab University in 1973; M.Sc. Economics from Quaid-i-Azam University in 1976; MA Economics (1980) and MA Political Economy (1981) from Boston University; and eventually Ph.D. Economics from University of New Hampshire in 1985.
Dr. Anwar has obtained certificates in Economics from American Economic Institute, Colorado State University; Arabic language from Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud University; Tax Administration for Developing Countries from University of Southern California; and Fiqh for Economists from the International Islamic University Malaysia.
Dr. Anwar has also actively participated in students government/union, as elected office bearer of student unions in Government College Sahiwal, Punjab University, and Quaid-i-Azam University.
Dr. Muhammad Anwar began his professional career as Staff Economist at the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) in 1976. He later, joined the Ministry of Planning and Development as a Trainee Economist. Dr. Anwar came to the United States in July 1977 on a Fellowship from USAID for his Ph.D. Upon completing his Ph.D. Economics, he joined International Institute of Islamic Thought in Washington, DC in 1985 as Research Associate. Dr. Anwar returned to Pakistan in 1987 and continued as a Research Associate with the International Institute of Islamic Thought in Islamabad, Pakistan until 1989. He joined the International Islamic University Malaysia, where he continued his research there during 1989-2004 specializing on topics related to Islamic economics with a specific emphasis on Islamic banking and finance.
Dr. Anwar has contributed research papers and discussions at more than forty national and international conferences, held in Brunei, India, Iran, Nigeria, Malaysia, Pakistan, and the USA.
Dr. Muhammad Anwar has authored several books, monographs, chapters in several edited works and more than thirty papers in peer reviewed academic journals and magazines. These publications are in the areas of Islamic banking, finance, marketing, development, macroeconomic modeling, and methodology of Islamic economics.
Dr. Muhammad Anwar has served International Islamic University Malaysia as Assistant Professor (1989-1992), Associate Professor (1992-1998), and Full Professor (1998-2004). He has also served as full professor at Framingham State University during 2005-2013.
Dr. Anwar has taught in diverse cultural, intellectual and educational environments worldwide. He has taught in-class and online courses at Harvard University; University of Phoenix Online; International Islamic University Islamabad; University of Massachusetts (Boston & Lowell); Quaid-i-Azam University; University of New Hampshire; Universiti Pertanian Malaysia; University of Southern New Hampshire; Universiti Malaya; and Center for Islamic Management Studies in Singapore
The influx of multicultural and multilingual students, impact of technology, admission of students with differing academic preparation, and changing economic and political pressures throughout the world has impacted students as well as teachers. He believes the material imparted in courses taught shall match changing needs of students. Therefore, He is open to adapt delivery methods that suit various learning environments and adjust course content to address current needs of his students without compromising integrity and quality of his teaching. It is essential that an effective method of teaching shall be adopted that is fit for the subject under study.
